The Bible: So many to choose from

So you’re thumbing through the “Bible Illuminated: The Book, New Testament” and you can’t help noticing that this recent entry in one of the book industry’s most aggressively marketed niches — Bible sales — looks like a fat, glossy fashion magazine. It doesn’t smell of perfume, but it has the same high-impact design, with flashy pullout quotes and eye-grabbing photos.

And right there in the Gospel of Mark, where it says, “God said, ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you,’ ” it opens into a sumptuous gallery of photos, many in color or even spreading across two full pages, of Martin Luther King Jr., Angelina Jolie, Gandhi, Bono, Mother Teresa, Che Guevara, Al Gore. Are these God’s messengers? Is this for real? Blasphemous? Or simply thought provoking?
